A two-day conference to learn ways to walk with people affected by incarceration, such as writing letters, preparing videos, stepping behind prison bars or assisting those adjusting to life after prison, is set for Oct. 21-22 at St. Joseph in Rosemount.

Twin Cities Prison Ministry is hosting the conference, which opens at 1 p.m. Oct. 21 with Archbishop Bernard Hebda celebrating Mass, and closes at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 22 with the commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Corrections, Paul Schnell, speaking about his vision for the future of corrections and how people can help his department achieve its goals.

Fay Connors

“The conference is open to everyone — those who are seeking to find out what God wants them to do, and those who currently journey with those affected by incarceration,” said Fay Connors, the ministry’s co-founder and a member of its board.

Connors told Practicing Catholic radio show host Patrick Conley, for a show debuting 9 p.m. Oct. 14 on Relevant Radio 1330 AM, that panelists at the conference who have been behind prison walls will share their personal stories of forgiveness, healing and then being recommissioned to do God’s work. Sister Helen Prejean will speak in a Zoom session 6 p.m. Oct. 21 about her work to end the death penalty around the world. She wrote the book “Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States,” which was made into an Academy Award winning movie, a play and an opera.

During her conversation with Conley, Connors reads a letter from a prison inmate who talks about prison ministry changing his life. To hear that letter and learn more about the conference, tune in to Practicing Catholic, which also repeats 1 p.m. Oct. 15 and 2 p.m. Oct. 16.

Produced by Relevant Radio and the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, the latest show also includes interviews with Barb Ernster from the World Apostolate of Fatima, who describes a special seven-day tour of the Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Fatima; and Deacon Mickey Friesen, director of the Center for Mission in the archdiocese, who talks about the celebration of World Mission Sunday Oct. 22 and Oct. 23.
