Construction crews will start final stages of St. John Vianney College Seminary’s renovation project Feb. 21 in St. Paul, with completion expected in about 18 months. The seminary is building a 20,000-square-foot addition, including a new chapel.

“The heart” of St. John Vianney College Seminary in St. Paul, as rector Father Jonathan Kelly described the facility’s chapel, will be demolished next spring and replaced with a larger chapel. It will include a confessional, wooden pews (instead of chairs), shrines for Mary and St. Joseph, and a 1,500-square-foot choir loft that will include an audio-visual control room, choir storage and room for 35 people.

Father Jonathan Kelly remembers the day not long ago when he received three messages to call Archbishop Bernard Hebda. That’s the day he learned he was offered the position of rector at the St. John Vianney College Seminary in St. Paul. He had interviewed for the position about three weeks prior.

Father Jonathan Kelly has been named the ninth rector of St. John Vianney College Seminary in St. Paul, Archbishop Bernard Hebda announced Jan. 22. Father Kelly, 47, has served as a formator and spiritual director at SJV since 2014.
