Q) I have recently been reading the Old Testament and have encountered some things that have troubled me. Among them is the way God talks about blessing those who obey him and cursing those who disobey him. I much prefer the New Testament and how Jesus reveals that God is love and calls us to love him. This just seems like God is coercing people into following him. What do I do?

Who will speak your name before God?

As evil as the COVID-19 pandemic has been, it has also been a blessing in at least one regard: It has heightened our awareness of the eternal value of being personally present to one another. The human person was created for and only flourishes with personal, in-the-flesh encounter. So COVID-19, with its quarantines, isolation and mask mandates, in its terrible way, heightens the import of embodiment and even more specifically, the Incarnation.

Sue Schinzel lost her mother, Margaret Strauss, on April 21 to COVID-19.

Strauss, 83, had Alzheimer’s disease and had lived for three years in the memory care unit at St. Therese of New Hope. When she moved to St. Therese, her husband, Thomas, 87, visited her several days a week, until coronavirus-related restrictions that began in March prevented him, Schinzel said. A staff member updated the family each day.
