(ZENIT News / Vatican City, 11.09.2022).- The Vatican’s Apostolic Library, one of the world’s most important old great libraries, launched a new specialized publication: The Vatican Library Review (VLR).

It is an international peer reviewed journal, which publishes articles of high scientific quality related to the Library’s vast funds. The VLR foments especially contributions resulting from innovative ideas and focuses, as well as interdisciplinary collaboration. In this context, as a center of research and promoter of culture, the Vatican Library seeks to promote, through this initiative, a community of intellectual exchange that transcends divisions of language, nationality and academic specialty. In this connection, the Vatican Library is a place in which researchers that are beginning their career, and those whose works don’t fit clearly in the limits of traditionally limited disciplines, can reach a wide public.

The Vatican Library Review accepts works written in English, German, French and Italian. It will be published twice a year and will collect briefer articles as well as notes that can include, among other things, conference reports, resumes of finished dissertations and book reviews.

The Apostolic Library dates back to the 15th century, to the time of Pope Nicholas V. It houses over 80,000 manuscripts, 1.6 million books (8,400 of which are incunabula ), as well as medal and coin collections. Heading this Vatican institution at present is Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça.

The first issue of this publication can be consulted here. The Vatican Library’s Website is at: https://www.vaticanlibrary.va/
