Lebanon’s President Michel Aoun has announced that Pope Francis will visit his country in June, provided that Vatican organizers can schedule an appropriate date.

Aoun met with the Pontiff in Rome on March 21, and discussed the “grave socio-economic problems” in Lebanon, the huge number of refugees from Syria, and the prospects for an end to the political crisis that has troubled the nation.

The Vatican has not issued a formal statement about the possibility of a papal visit to Lebanon this year, but informed sources said that June 12 was a likely target date.
