Janet and I started homeschooling our children back in 1980 when our oldest daughter (now 43) was just 4 years old. It was illegal in Michigan at the time, but we knew the kids were ours, not the States, and we objected to what was taught in the public schools. With 1 of 5 graduating illiterate, we knew we could do better than that. We laid low and taught them at home.

Homeschooling was the best thing we ever did for our four children and we all had a blast learning together and we are all best friends to this day. We homeschooled all through High School and our kids later excelled with honors at university. Our grandkids are now being homeschooled too.

Black households saw the largest increase in homeschooling, from 3.3% in the spring of 2020 to 16.1% in the fall.

Explanations for the rise vary, but the common thread is that a once-temporary decision to educate children in the home led to unexpected benefits for students and their families. READ
