Praise and worship, inspiring talks and Mass with Archbishop Bernard Hebda will be part of a charismatic renewal conference March 13 at St. Peter in Richfield.

“Practicing Catholic” radio show host Patrick Conley talked about those details and more March 5 with School Sister of Notre Dame Mary Anne Schaenzer as they discussed the upcoming Catholic Charismatic Renewal Office winter conference.

Sister Mary Anne, board president of the CCRO in the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, has experienced the charismatic renewal since 1968 and served in various positions within the renewal. In 2002, she was elected to the national service committee for the U.S. Catholic Charismatic Renewal. She serves as director of pastoral care at St. Stephen in Anoka.

Sister Mary Anne told Conley it is important to learn about the charismatic renewal “so that we can be working together to build up the kingdom of God among us.”

“The charismatic gifts are given to be of service,” she said. “Some people might have a special gift of administration, or special gift of teaching or a special gift of preaching.”

When is a gift a charism? Sister Mary Anne gave the example of a priest explaining what it can be like giving a homily. “He said, ‘when I’m preaching and somebody tells me afterward that they liked my homily, I think, well, I did a good job of preaching. But if they tell me that it struck them at the heart, it got to them, it convicted them of something they need to do. … I think that’s a charism because that’s the Spirit working in them.’”

The March 13 conference begins with 9:15 a.m. Mass at St. Peter celebrated by Archbishop Hebda. Participating organizations will give brief presentations, including the renewal office; Community of Christ the Redeemer, a lay community; NET Ministries, an outreach to high school students; St. Paul’s Outreach, a campus ministry; and Charismata, Emmanuel Community and People of Praise.

Practicing Catholic“I asked them to give what would be like a TED talk,” Sister Mary Anne said, with each using about 18 minutes to share their vision and mission, and how God is using them. “And then give us one thing to celebrate with them,” she said.

Bishop Peter Smith from Catholic Charismatic Renewal International Service (CHARIS), and also a member of People of Praise, will describe CHARIS via recorded message. A message from Bishop Andrew Cozzens will close the conference, which ends at 3:30 p.m.

On-site seating is limited, but all activities will be livestreamed, including Mass, speakers and praise and worship.

A list of speakers and links to a flyer, brochure and registration information for the conference are available at ccro-msp.org. People also can call the renewal office at 763-571-5314.
