Archbishop Bernard Hebda had planned to consecrate a year to St. Joseph for the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis from Dec. 8, 2020, to Dec. 8, 2021, when, coincidentally, Pope Francis consecrated a year to St. Joseph worldwide for the same dates.

“It’s just a beautiful working of the Holy Spirit,” said Father Tom Margevicius during his appearance on the 9 p.m., Feb. 26 episode of the “Practicing Catholic” radio show on Relevant Radio 1330 AM. The archbishop asked Father Margevicius, director of worship for the archdiocese, to meet with a group of lay faithful to consider ideas and make plans for how the archdiocese could best observe the year of St. Joseph.

“We … started meeting and coming up with different ideas and plans,” Father Margevicius told “Practicing Catholic” host Patrick Conley. Out of those meetings emerged the idea for “Cuppa Joe,” an upcoming video series for the faithful to learn more about St. Joseph.

The number 10 kept popping up for the planning team, starting with the archdiocese’s nine parishes named after St. Joseph plus the sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, who founded St. Joseph’s Hospital and St. Catherine University, both in St. Paul. Ten full months remain in the Year of St. Joseph, with March typically devoted by the Church to St. Joseph, Father Margevicius said.

Practicing CatholicFather Donald Calloway, author of “Consecration to St. Joseph: The Wonders of Our Spiritual Father,” describes in his book the “10 wonders” of St. Joseph. In the book’s 10 chapters, Father Calloway, a priest of the Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception, looks at various aspects of St. Joseph’s life in the Church, Father Margevicius said.

Father Margevicius suggested that the “Cuppa Joe” name be used for a series of 10 monthly talks by local theologians — each talk 15 to 20 minutes in length — from March through December on the 10 wonders referenced by Father Calloway, at 10 locations in the archdiocese entrusted to the patronage of St. Joseph.

Father Margevicius will give the first talk at St. Joseph in West St. Paul, which will launch online March 2. The other nine talks follow on the first Tuesday afternoon of the next nine months.

Each new talk will be posted that Tuesday at 4 p.m., a popular time for a coffee break, on the archdiocese’s Facebook page Facebook.com/ArchdioceseSPM, Instagram account Instagram.com/ArchdioceseSPM and YouTube channel Youtube.com/user/ArchdioceseSPM. To learn more, visit archspm.org/cuppajoe.

Father Margevicius described the first five “Cuppa Joe” sessions during his interview. To learn more, tune in the “Practicing Catholic” radio show at 9 p.m. Feb. 26, 1 p.m. Feb. 27 or 2 p.m. Feb. 28 on Relevant Radio 1330 AM.

“Practicing Catholic” is produced by Relevant Radio and the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis. Other guest interviews on the Feb. 26 “Practicing Catholic” show are Bishop Andrew Cozzens, who discusses how to have a good Lent, and native Minnesotan Bishop Donald DeGrood, bishop of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, who describes his first year as a bishop.
