As the faithful wrap up Christmas shopping, many will be thinking outside their immediate circle of family and friends to others who might be most in need.

Food, clothing and shelter are among basic necessities that some struggle to provide. The Christmas season — remembering God’s great gift of his Son, Jesus — is a perfect time to remember the trying circumstances of so many.

Fortunately, within the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis lies a broad network of charities with resources and people in place. Some are widely known, such as Catholic Charities, Sharing and Caring Hands and St. Vincent de Paul.

Others might not be top of mind, such as the more than 20 pregnancy resource centers across the archdiocese. Financial donations go toward medical care and other services, and gifts can include sleepers for infants and personal care items such as soaps and lotions. Options for Women locations in St. Paul and Stillwater need physicians willing to volunteer.

The Philomena House maternity home in St. Paul provides rent-free housing through delivery and infants’ early lives. The Catholic Worker House in Stillwater offers housing, food assistance and mentors for families moving from homelessness to independent living.

Some charities are based in neighborhoods, such as the Franciscan Brothers of Peace in the St. Paul Midway area. With a mission to serve the most vulnerable, from the pre-born to the poor and homeless, the Franciscan Brothers offer a food shelf and clothing. The Visitation Sisters serve north Minneapolis residents. While the pandemic has canceled in-person events, the sisters provide food, bus tokens and grocery store gift cards to people in need.

Of course, any number of charities merit assistance and put gifts to good use. Ask family members for their thoughts. Many charities have links on their websites for financial donations, or call them to learn more.
