There are two opposite meanings when we discuss “service in the scripture.” It can mean a submission of man to God or bondage to another man, which is slavery. The true liberation of man is when we submit ourselves to God. To serve God is to keep His commandments, to obey Him and to bind ourselves to Him, not only in ritual worship but most especially through obedience. Jesus Christ names a particular rival that can become an obstacle in our service to God and that is money. It can lead us to an idolatrous worship. That is why Christ reminds us that “No one can serve two masters. He will either hate one or love the other.”

Jesus Christ was The Servant sent by God. He came to serve and not to be served. He gave his life for us. Even as a child he revealed to us how his Father wishes to be served and how we are to serve our brothers. Everything that Christ did was in obedience to the Father’s command. Therefore as servants of God we offer the same obedience and service to Christ. He is not doing anything extraordinary. “We are useless servants who have done no more than our duty.”
