VATICAN CITY – JANUARY 15: Pope John Paul II (R) greets Washington's Archbishop Cardinal Theodore Edgar McCarrick at the Pope's weekly general audience January 15, 2003 in Vatican City, Italy.

George Weigel, biographer of St. John Paul II, said that McCarrick was a “pathological personality,” and that his ability to lie to, and deceive those around him was a “hallmark” of his career and rise in the Church.
