The long-awaited Vatican report on former cardinal Theodore McCarrick is reportedly expected to be published next week.

Reuters reported on Thursday that the report would be published before a meeting of US bishops this month. According to CNA, sources at the Vatican’s Congregation for Bishops and Secretariat of State have independently given November 10 as the publication date.

CNA quotes one unnamed official as calling the report “lengthy”, adding: “The version I saw was more than 600 pages.”

“I don’t know if it will all go out in the end, or answer everyone’s questions, but it says a lot.”

Another official said: “I hope, but I’m not optimistic, the report will recognise that there were universal rumours about the guy for a long time.”

The report is expected to address questions of how McCarrick rose through the ecclesiastical ranks despite widespread rumours about his behaviour. It is also hoped it will answer questions around his financial dealings and gift-giving.

McCarrick was laicised last year after a Vatican investigation found him guilty of sexual misconduct. The former Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster is highest-profile Church figure to be dismissed from the priesthood in modern times.
