A woman with links to ousted Cardinal Angelo Becciu has been arrested.

Cecilia Marogna was arrested in Milan on Tuesday and is being held by Italian financial authorities. Italian media say she was detained on an international warrant issued through Interpol by the Vatican.

Last week, it was reported that Marogna received €500,000 from Becciu to build “off-books” intelligence networks to help missionaries in conflict zones. She has denied any wrongdoing.

Italian television show Le Iene first reported the allegations on October 5, claiming to have documents showing Marogna used the money to buy expensive handbags and other luxury goods. She stated that all of the money went to her Vatican consultancy and her salary work. Expensive gifts “were used to create cooperative relationships,” Marogna added.
