The Chaplain of the Fleet (L) and the Archbishop of Canterbury, William Temple (R) process with a crucifer for an Anglican service on the quarterdeck of HMS King George V at Scapa Flow, in the Orkney Islands, Scotland, during World War II. After the war, both institutions would undergo a steep decline in prestige and power, with the Royal Navy dropping from more than 2,000 ships to fewer than 80 operational commissioned ships in 2020, and Anglican churchgoing currently hovering around 1% of the U.K. population.
