A tough new programme “to free Catholic men” is catching on, though it has its critics. Exodus 90 seeks to liberate men from the slavery of sin (hence Exodus) over a period of 90 days, in the belief that bad habits take longer than even the 40 days of Lent to shake off. The programme is based on three foundations: prayer, asceticism and fraternity. Prayer involves a daily holy hour made privately, along with a reflection and a meditation on Exodus.

Asceticism involves a rigorous programme of exercise, fasting and abstinence from alcohol, sweets, desserts, eating between meals, watching television, listening to unedifying music, playing video games and using a computer for anything other than work. Exodus 90 advocates a short cold shower every day and seven hours sleep every night.

Fraternity demands the establishment of a small community of between five and seven men who are able to meet weekly to support each other with friendship and prayer throughout the process.
