A recent over-the-coffee discussion with a priest friend of mine still tugs at my heart. We were discussing spiritual fatherhood, a key role of every Catholic man — married or single — given our lot in life, which hopefully and prayerfully follows in accord with God’s plan. He posed a question as I was sharing some thoughts about June’s Catholic Watchmen intentions: “How are you a spiritual father?”

This year, I’ve been spending some time each day with St. Maximilian Kolbe, whose feast day we celebrate this month on the 14th. Before his martyrdom at Auschwitz (he volunteered to take the place of another in the starvation bunker) he was spiritual father to many and spent his life making his mother, “Mamuzia,” as he would refer to the Blessed Mother — that’s Polish for “Mom”— better known and loved. “To the Sacred Heart through the Immaculata,” he would say. I pray his consecration to the Immaculata every day, which begs that we be made fit instruments to draw others to the Sacred Heart.

Stories of Catholic priests’ “creativity, sacrifice and compassionate service” during this time of the coronavirus have inspired an effort led by the Institute for Priestly Formation in Omaha to recognize and celebrate “these spiritual fathers” on Father’s Day, which is June 21.
