The “poor Uyghurs,” as Pope Francis describes them in a new book and listing them for the first time among persecuted believers, have in recent days dominated the news regarding relations between the Vatican and China. Despite Chinese communist denials, the Ughur Muslims are persecuted. And this flap, coming on the heels of the renewal of the Sino-Vatican pact, is the least of the pope’s problems in China.
