Italian broker Gianluigi Torzi was “released on bail,” after being interrogated by the Vatican’s Office of the Promoter of Justice, in the framework of the investigation of the sale of building No. 60 on Sloane Avenue in London.

The Holy See Press Office explained this recent development in a statement on Monday, June 15, 2020.

Signed by the Promoter of Justice Gian Piero Milano, and Deputy Alessandro Diddi, the order notes that the magistrates “have taken note of what has been deduced in an articulated memorandum handed over by Mr Torzi” and “of the numerous attached documents considered useful to reconstruct the events being investigated,” the statement explained.

Torzi was accused of extortion, embezzlement, aggravated fraud and money laundering, crimes for which Vatican law provides years of imprisonment.

The accused acted as intermediary for the Secretariat of State in finalizing the purchase of the property in 2018 and 2019.

On June 5th, the Holy See reported Torzi’s arrest in connection with “known events related to the sale of the London property on Sloane Avenue, which involved a network of companies in which some of the officials of the Secretariat of State were present.”
