Though I have always thought this coronavirus issue is media hype and far over exaggerated, I thought I would share the opinion of my son-in-law Wes who is a doctor (and who I am extremely proud of).
I thought his explanation was perfectly rational and reasonable and explained the crisis in a simple manner. So I thought I’d share it with all of you.
“COVID-19 isn’t that much more deadly than influenza but it has the potential to spread so quickly that there could be far too many patients for our nations hospital systems to care for at one time. In that situation mortality would increase dramatically for COVID-19 and Influenza.
“So I think it’s reasonable to try to slow down the spread of the virus and spread the number of patients out over a longer span of time so we can adequately care for them. Our hospitals are already pretty full in the winter. I had to wait 10 hours last week to get a gentleman admitted from the emergency department into the ICU.”
“Can’t speak to which situation would be less economically damaging.”
In other words, the way I understand this is, the virus is not so deadly that it’s killing a lot of people, rather it spreads so rapidly that the hospitals will be too full to handle the cases unless we can slow down the spread.
