(ZENIT News / Rome, 20.06.2022).- Observed on Sunday, June 26 this year is the Pope’s World Day of Charity, held usually on the Sunday closest to the feast of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. On this day, Peter’s  Pence, a special collection is held during Masses. The entire amount collected is sent to the Vatican, which the Holy Father then allocates to those works of charity and service that merit it most, including those affected by natural disasters, migrants, mission churches, etc.

The amount collected in 2021 was made public recently, along with the list of countries that contribute most to Peter’s Pence and papal charities. Here is that list:

  1. United States: 13 million (29.3%)
  2. Italy: 5 million (11.3%)
  3. Germany: 2.3 million (5.2%)
  4. South Korea: 1.4 million (3.2%)
  5. France: 1.2 million (2.7%)
  6. Spain: 0.9million (2%)
  7. Brazil: 0.9 million (2%)
  8. Ireland: 0.8 million (1.8%)
  9. Czech Republic: 0.6 million (1.3%)
  10. Canada: 0.4million (0.9%)

The total of all the remaining countries is: 6.5 million (14.6% of the total).

Hence, the countries that contribute most in the Americas are the United States, Canada and Brazil, and in Europe: Italy, Germany, France, Spain and the Czech Republic. It’s interesting to note that in Asia the only country that joins this list is South Korea, a country where the number of Catholic has grown significantly.
