Vos estis lux mundi, the 2019 motu proprio of Pope Francis about the handling of sex-abuse cases, has been tested by the case of the pope’s friend, Bishop Gustavo Zanchetta, accused of abuse as early as 2015, yet was given a Vatican job by the pope in the year Vos estis was promulgated. Until this pastoral myopia — perhaps a symptom of hierarchical institutions, but not an incurable one — isn’t addressed, the path to lasting reform appears rather blurry.
