This morning, Pope Francis received the President of the Government of the Republic of Croatia, Andrej Plenković, in audience.

According to a communique released by the Holy See Press Office, during the “cordial” discussions, appreciation was expressed for the two States good existing bilateral relations, along with their intention to further develop collaboration in sectors of mutual interest. 

In addition, the statement noted, the Pope and President focused on the main commitments of the Croatian Presidency in the Council of the European Union, with particular reference to the challenges that concern the future of Europe.

Finally, various international and regional issues were discussed, including the situation of the Croatian people in Bosnia and Herzegovina, migration, peace and security.

The Croatian president subsequently met with Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, accompanied by Secretary for Relations with States, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher.
