The Vatican’s liturgy chief, Abp. Arthur Roche, said this week that Pope Francis issued Traditionis custodes as the effort to reconcile the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) “has not entirely been successful.” He said previous documents from St. John Paul II (Ecclesia Dei) and Benedict XVI (Summorum Pontificum), meant to encourage unity, failed to do, making it necessary to return to the 1962 Missal.
