In past consistories, Brandmüller says, discussions among the cardinals were characterized by plainspoken frankness. Now, unfortunately, that frankness is being replaced by a strange silence, which we see in the pope’s decision to hold the discussions behind closed doors. This comes at a time when cardinals need to express themselves clearly and with frankness when it comes to the truths of faith and morals.
