Prayer, understanding bioethical concerns such as end-of-life decisions, and always keeping in mind the importance of life and human dignity are among ways Catholics can face today’s health care challenges, a nurse practitioner and president emeritus of health care apostolate Curatio said.
“The Church has given us tools and guidelines to help us follow God’s laws, to discern these biological issues that we come across in our everyday life,” Teresa Tawil told Patrick Conley for an episode of “Practicing Catholic” that debuts 9 p.m. March 4 on Relevant Radio 1330 AM.
Those tools can be found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, encyclicals, apostolic letters and other writings from the popes and other Catholic documents, Tawil said. Compilations of important Church teachings can be found at the National Catholic Bioethics Center at ncbcenter.org, the Minnesota Catholic Conference at mncatholic.org, and other Catholic websites and organizations, Tawil said.
Young people who might think such questions lie only in the future can prepare for the unforeseen by reading about ethical issues around health care, said Tawil, a member of St. Raphael in Crystal. They also can become informed to benefit the community around them.
“Everything we do affects the others around us and the very breath we take,” she said. “Right now, the use of masks, the cleanliness of our air, these are impacting us. And I think if you are oriented to the good, if we can look back to natural law, then you want to do good. You need to know ahead of time, what are these principles that you want to follow in your life? We need to live intentionally, in other words.”
