Catholic Charities of St. Paul and Minneapolis, which for more than 150 years has helped meet people’s needs for shelter, food and other assistance, is offering the public a way to celebrate the Christmas season and assist “our most vulnerable neighbors,” said Hayley Mueller, the nonprofit’s vice president of development.
She recently joined “Practicing Catholic” radio show host Patrick Conley to discuss Catholic Charities’ Warming House — a free event Dec. 10 and Dec. 11, in the north parking lot at Mall of America in Bloomington.
Holiday displays, activities and food will be available, Mueller said, as well as a trackless train and “Christmassy” animals. People can bring new items, such as socks, underwear and hooded sweatshirts, to Catholic Charities’ Giving Tree on site, and participate in a couple of “speed volunteering” activities, including assembling laundry soap packets for Catholic Charities clients, and “sock and roll” sets — Christmas gifts for clients that include “a nice pair of socks,” Mueller said, chapstick, lotion and hand warmers tied up with a Christmas bow.
“This has just tremendous impact on the people we serve,” Mueller said, adding “it’s a nice way to bring the whole family together in service.”
To learn more about the event and Catholic Charities’ services, listen to this episode of the “Practicing Catholic” radio show. It airs at 9 p.m. Dec. 3, 1 p.m. Dec. 4 and 2 p.m. Dec. 5 on Relevant Radio 1330 AM. The Catholic Spirit also posted an article with more details.
Produced by Relevant Radio and the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, the latest show also includes interviews with Deacon Gordon Bird, who gives an update on Catholic Watchmen, commissioned by Bishop Andrew Cozzens five years ago, and how people can get involved, and Nancy Bandzuch from Catholic Spouts, who provides tips for parents on how to help their children grow in faith this holiday season.
