Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe (L) debates Republican candidate Glenn Youngkin Sept. 28 at an Alexandria, Virginia, debate in which McAuliffe said, “I don’t think parents should be telling schools what they should teach” — a statement that many observers said contributed to McAuliffe’s defeat in the Nov. 2 election.
“Parents must cooperate closely with the teachers of the schools to which they entrust their children to be educated; moreover, teachers in fulfilling their duty are to collaborate very closely with parents, who are to be heard willingly …” (Code of Canon Law, No. 796)
