In his tribute, Pope Francis said the former President of the Vatican Tribunal, Giuseppe Dalla Torre Del Tempio di Sanguinetto, was a “man of culture and of faith.” Dalla Torre died at 77 on December 3, 2020, after contracting COVID-19.

In a telegram reported by “Vatican News,” the Holy Father praised this “faithful collaborator of the Holy See,” a man “capable of a luminous Christian witness” and of “assiduous” dedication in his functions as President, but also as Rector of the Free University of Santa Maria Assunta (LUMSA) of Rome. The Pontiff assured the deceased’s family, his wife Nicoletta and his daughter Paola, of his “spiritual closeness.”

On December 5, the Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin presided over the funeral in Saint Peter’s Basilica. He described the deceased as “a good, humble and wise man,” and a “true disciple of Jesus, “ and as a “tireless messenger of the spiritual, moral and human values of His Gospel.”

The Cardinal recalled in his homily that Giuseppe Dalla Torre was dedicated to encouraging young people to search for “the true, the beautiful and the good, namely, to love the things ‘of on High.’” Gifted with a “brilliant intelligence,” and of “scientific rigor,” he lived a “profound and sincere “ faith in the person of Jesus.

The magistrate was replaced in his functions at the Vatican’s Tribunal in October 2019.
