SAVANNAH, Georgia — Police said they are investigating the death of a 3-year-old boy who ran into a pond at a Georgia park.
Savannah police have characterized the boy’s death as “suspicious,” the Savannah Morning News reported.
On Aug. 18, police responded to an EMS call at Daffin Park and found that the child had been pulled from a shallow pond.
Chatham County Coroner Dr. Bill Wessinger said the child was with a babysitter and ran into the water. A passerby spotted the boy, Wessinger said.
The park is across the street from Blessed Sacrament Catholic School and some teachers and students were at the park during the incident.
School Principal Lynn Brown said the passerby could not swim and told the teachers about the boy in the pond. Brown said one of the teachers jumped into the water to save the boy, who was not a student at the school.
“It was very disheartening that we could not save the child,” Brown said.
An official cause of death was not immediately released. Wessinger said no criminal charges have been filed but that may change. He also said the autopsy report could take several weeks.
