The Catholic Spirit won 10 awards from the Catholic Press Association for its work in 2019, including three first place awards for design, news reporting and the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis’ new website.
The awards are:
- First place for best news writing on a local or regional event: “Homeless no more” by Joe Ruff.
- First place for best layout of article or column: “Communion of saints” by Maria Wiering, design by Caron Olhoft
- First place for best new website: archspm.org, overseen by Nicole Mamura
- Second place for best news writing on national event: “Brother James Miller” package by Christina Capecchi
- Second place for best multiple picture package, feature: “Come to the water” by Dave Hrbacek
- Third place for best coverage of pro-life issues: multiple stories
- “Caring for the smallest” by Bridget Ryder
- “Unplanned response” by Dave Hrbacek
- “Compassion in action” by Dave Hrbacek
- Honorable mention for best tabloid font page design.
- Honorable mention for best photo-illustration: “Remember you are dust” by Dave Hrbacek
- Honorable mention for best photograph (scenic, still-life or weather): “Snow on St. Paul” by Dave Hrbacek
- Honorable mention for best in-depth news/special reporting: “Keeping the faith in the new Northeast” by Jonathan Liedl
The awards were announced July 2 during the 2020 Catholic Media Virtual Conference. The Catholic Press Association of the United States and Canada has served the Catholic press for more than 100 years. Its membership includes Catholic media and communications professionals.
