The Holy Father has appointed Rev. Paul Dempsey of the clergy of the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin, previously Vicar Forane and Parish Priest of Newbridge, as Bishop of Achonry (Ireland).

Rev. Paul Dempsey was born in Carlow, in the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin, on April 20, 1971. He completed his philosophical and theological studies first at the Milltown Institute of Theology and Philosophy , of the Spiritual Fathers and, later, at the St. Patrick’s College of Carlow, as a seminarian for the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin.

He was ordained a priest for the aforementioned diocese on July 6, 1997.

After the ordination he was: Vice-parish priest, first in Clane (1997-2004), then in Kildare (2004-2008), and at the same time he was Director of the pastoral care for vocations and apostolate of young people. After a Sabbatical Year, he was again Vice-Parish Priest in Naas, Sallins & Two-Mile-House (2009-2014) and then in Newbridge (2009-2014). In 2014 he was appointed diocesan Consultor and Forane Vicar for the Deanery of Kildare and Leighlin Nord. In 2015, the assignment of parish priest in Newbridge was added to the previous ones.
