San Antonio, Texas, May 18, 2021 / 15:55 pm (CNA).

A woman walking into a San Antonio abortion clinic was saved on Saturday by a pro-life protestor after a man jumped out of the trunk of her car and fired gun shots at her.

“When the pro-lifer scared away the shooter, he saved two lives that day,” Cathy Nix, acting executive director of San Antonio Coalition for Life, told CNA.

Outside Alamo Women’s Reproductive Services a woman was conversing with a pro-life volunteer as she was on her way into the abortion clinic May 15. As they were speaking, a man jumped out of the trunk of the woman’s car, pulled out a gun, and began shooting at her, San Antonio police said.

Police said the protestor, who was counseling the woman, had a firearm on him and shot back at the man. The protester had a license to carry the pistol, police said. It was reported no one was injured in the shooting.

A spokesman for the San Antonio Police Department, Chris Ramos said the pro-life counselor’s actions were “reasonable.”

“He saw someone engaged in shooting. So, he went and stepped in and intervened and it stopped that shooting from occurring,” Ramos said.

“I think the core of this story shows the desire of Pro-Life advocates to protect,” Kimberlyn Schwartz, communications director at Texas Right to Life, told CNA. “That desire to protect manifests every day on the sidewalk as we reach out to women to protect them from the pain of abortion and protect children from this horrific death.”

The victim was transported to police headquarters. Authorities say they believe the shooting could be a domestic violence incident.

Investigators recovered a firearm which they believe the perpetrator dropped while fleeing the scene, KSAT 12 reported.

“We pray this woman is safe and her preborn child is safe. We thank God for protecting her in this horrible situation,” Schwartz told CNA.

Jordan McMorrough, communications director for the Archdiocese of San Antonio, told CNA that “our prayers are with the woman involved, as media accounts at this time indicate that this is being investigated as an incident of domestic violence.”
