In 1885, Archbishop John Ireland founded what would become the University of St. Thomas, an archdiocesan university in St. Paul. Twenty years later, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, then led by Archbishop Ireland’s sister, Mother Seraphine Ireland, established what today is St. Catherine University, just a mile south of St. Thomas.

Longtime theology professor at St. Kate’s in St. Paul, later a bishop, dies at age 85

A native of Czechoslovakia who fled persecution by that country’s Communist regime and taught theology, ministered in parishes and served as a military chaplain in Minnesota for nearly 30 years before being appointed a Czech Republic bishop, died Aug. 10 in California. St. Catherine University to change some procedures after report on musician Haas

An independent investigation of sexual misconduct allegations against Catholic music composer David Haas in the years he held summer music programs at St. Catherine University in St. Paul found that some members of Haas’ Music Ministry Alive team found his conduct uncomfortable, or were aware of “general comments” about his behavior.
